All Existing Home Medical Equipment Providers Must Be Accredited

All existing home medical equipment providers must be accredited by Sept. 30, 2009 to continue billing Medicare Part B, CMS announced January 9, 2008 at a long-awaited and somewhat anticlimactic Special Open Door Forum.

"If you are not accredited by Sept. 30, 2009, the National Suppliers Clearinghouse will revoke your billing privileges," said CMS official Sandra Bastinelli. For any provider, whether it's a mom-and-pop, a pharmacy or a podiatrist or physician's office, who supplies HME and bills Medicare Part B must be accredited by one of the 10 deemed accrediting organizations. Providers must become accredited by Sept. 30, 2009, even if they are not participating in the NCB National Competitive bidding program.

Wayne Stanfield, president and CEO, National Association of Independent Medical Equipment Suppliers, Halifax, VA writes: Mandatory accreditation is going to eliminate 80 percent of supplier numbers. We'll probably lose 90,000 [suppliers] from accreditation. The accreditation is going to be what causes the elimination's. And with the losses of all these small providers, access is going to be affected--it has to be."
