-------RADAR TRANSIT

Unified Human Services Transportaion System, Inc. trading as RADAR was formed in 1974 as a not for profit community corporation.  RADAR contracts with area service agencies, governments and organizations to provide transportation services for their clients or citizens primarily in the Roanoke Valley and the surrounding areas.

The concept of a consolidated transportation system for the Roanoke Valley can be traced to an August 1974 regularly scheduled meeting of the directors of various human service agencies in the area.  The Roanoke Valley Council of Community Services, Inc. a planning and social service policy body had organized this meeting.  One item on the agenda was a discussion pertaining to potential areas of service delivery needs for client transportation.

Eventually, twenty-four agencies cooperated to form a non-profit transportation organization known as Unified Human Services Transportation System, Inc. (USHTS).

The goals of RADAR are to provide a consolidated system to meet the varied transportation needs of human service agencies and the general public through purchase of service agreements. In addition, to encourage and cooperate in the development of a regional transportation it would provide a more efficient and cost effected service.

At present RADAR operates fifty-five vehicles, which includes cars, vans, and buses. Approximately two-thirds of the fleet is handicapped accessible.  All vehicles are equipped with radios and safety equipment.

RADAR drivers are trained in defensive driving, CPR, and Passenger Assistance techniques.  During the last fiscal year these drivers provided over 55,000 hours of service, 166,000 one-way trips and traveled over 723,000 miles.

RADAR moved into their new 16,000 square foot facility in October 2004 and received the Federal Transit Award for 2004 for marketing strategy.
